value is i want to find whatever i do that can best make a contribution to the people in the city i love and the state i love. you and i both know this because you have done some great shows on this. we live in a country that has so much work to do. we still live in a country where men and women are denied equal citizenship rights because of who they decide to love. we live in a country where we have an abject failure in war on drugs that is costing taxpayers billions and billions of dollars and locking up more people than any country on earth. we still haven't faced up to immigration policy. we still have poverty, people working full-time jobs, still below the poverty line. there is an urgency to address one simple test. when a child stands up in oakland, california and a child stands up in a more affluent area and they say those five words, liberty and justice for all, we are still in a country that's working to make that more perfect union that makes those words real. we all should feel like we should be thinking what can i do in my life to best serve that ideal. >> booker for pr

mix in chicago that's getting more dire by the day. the city marked a grim milestone this week, 500 murders so far this year. it was a shooting on the city's west side thursday that pushed the number to 500. police say a 40-year-old man was shot in the head outside a convenience store. another troubling number, 270, that's the number of children who have been killed by guns in chicago in the last five years. back to this year's 500 homicides. that's up 50% from last year. it is the highest the murder rate has been in the city since 2008. it was 512 then. what's going on here? some say it's a police problem, that chicago police are simply outnumbered and outgunned. unable to handle the influx of kids who want to kill kids to make some cash or to climb the social ladder in chicago gang life. or is it a gun problem? the city has some of the toughest laws on the books. but the chicago police department says 87% of the homicides this year are a result of gun violence. so let's talk. joining me tonight for this conversation, t.o. hardiman. and harold pollock joins us as well. welcome, gen
